The Beverley Lewis Safe House ¦ Our History
How did we start ?
We had a women's group at East Ham College - it started in 1990.
We thought of the idea of a 'safe house', a place
for Women with learning disabilities who feel frightened, or are being treated in a bad way.
What did we talk about in the women's groups ?
In the women's groups we talked about, issues important to us like families,
our bodies, babies and clothes.
We also talked about getting attacked by people in power.
What did we want to do about it ?
We decided we had to act and try and set up a safe house for women with learning difficulties,
where we would not have to be afraid and we could talk more about things that were important to us.
What sort of things did we have to organise to set up the refuge ?
We organised several groups to help make this happen.
We set up a policy group, a house group and a money group.
What did we achieve ?
In november 1995 The Beverly Lewis House Refuge opened.
The safe house is managed by the East Thames Housing Group.
We achieved our goal.
